Bizen Pottery Matcha Bowl - Sangiri

Sale price$95.00

Fired unglazed at high temperatures over long periods, each Bizen piece is inherently unique. Subtle variations in color and pattern emerge naturally from flames and ash, ranging from reddish-brown to deep black, while the hand-crafted, rustic texture develops a gentle luster over time, revealing its distinctive character.

This piece features the traditional Bizen firing technique called Sangiri, where natural charcoal and fire create subtle shades of gray and reddish brown without any glaze. Each piece reveals a unique pattern shaped by flame, earth, and time.

This is a traditional matcha bowl, but could also be used as a small dessert bowl.

GENSO — Preserving over 1,000 years of Bizen tradition

Bizen pottery has been cultivated for more than a millennium in the village of Bizen, one of Japan’s six ancient kiln sites. GENSO is the collaboration of three skilled artists, including the 19th-generation heir of a prestigious Bizen kiln. Together, they honor the techniques and aesthetics passed down through centuries, while also bringing their own vision and creativity to each piece. This balance of tradition and personal expression results in works that feel both timeless and contemporary, carrying the rich legacy of Bizen pottery into modern life.

Bizen Pottery — No Added Glazes or Paints

Born from clay, fire, and the elements, Bizen pottery is unglazed, relying on the natural textures and colors developed during high-temperature firing. Subtle variations in hue and pattern emerge from the kiln’s heat, ash, and flame, making each piece entirely unique. Its earthy, understated elegance deepens with use, reflecting the quiet power of nature and the skill of generations of artisans.
